Sunday 20th January 2008, 00:44Time to RememberIn November 2007 my six year old son earned the opportunity to have a place in his beavers group as they took part in the Remembrance Day Parade in our local village. He was very proud to be selected and as he marched we as a family followed the parade. Everybody was represented in the parade; Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Fire, Ambulance, Prison, Coast Guards, Scouts, Brownies, Girl Guides, Councillors, MPs, schools, churches, voluntary groups and charities.
As we collected around the war memorial those who had fought in the Second World War were moved to the front. These elderly men recounted some of their memories from that time of horror. Each group laying a wreath to mark the commitment all the armed services had made. The speeches recalled local heroes and particular attention was given to those who had lost their lives in the many wars of the last 100 years so that we and our children could enjoy the freedoms of today.
During the two minute silence I reflected on the life and freedoms we take for granted every day due to their sacrifice and also reminded my self that our armed services are still battling for these rights in many countries today to ensure we and many others walk with freedom.
My point is not a political one; I just wanted to put down a marker that in our world today there are many families who have one of their members employed within the armed and public services. Often we are lucky enough to be blind sighted to the commitment they make to ensure our communities are safe, that we can call on them in our moment of need and that as we sleep they wrestle with the ugliness of life we rarely see.
Our thanks to them and their families for the many sacrifices they make every day often unseen.
Thanks
Roy
