I was at the IOD conference t'other day.
They had a session on companies with a conscience - it was well done - some great speakers who run 'sorted' companies.
One guy came out with something that I remembered - 'A Business is legally a person and a person without a conscience is a pyschopath'
Sort of enough said really!
Anyway - the chat turned to going green - and what companies could do to make a difference.
The best thing I heard ( instead of all the fancy words normally said by people who have made the whole green thing their living) - do some green stuff that is relevant to your company. So for example in A4e where we are mostly office based - look at the practical things that everyone can do - like not filling the kettle more than you need, turning of computer screens, switching of the lights, recycling, buy fairtrade products etc etc. I thought this was a great way to start to get green - start with things that everyone can contribute to. Yeah yeah we have our environmental policies (and I know we do plenty of stuff already) - but people need to see how they can do their bit - me included.
So - my next thought is that we will have an A4e 'trying to get green' bit on our website - headed up by a staff volunteer (apply to me directly!) - listing all the things we can all do and our posh stuff like the environmental policy and strategies.
If the volunteer is smart enough they might even find a way to tell us how we are all doing in our 'A4e trying to get green' mission.
Getting green could be fun...
I look forward to hearing your ideas - and to see who pops up as a volunteer to head the mission.
