I had the chance to visit South Africa last week in response to a number of invitations we have received to explore the opportunities to deliver our services. Arriving in Johannesburg I was struck by the sense of energy and spirit the local people have as they build their country. Unemployment is a real issue which affects most families in South Africa particularly in the rural communities. And yet there is a sense of pride in many peoples faces as they seek to rebuild their country based on principles of equality and freedom for all. The government has done much to establish foundations for growth and freedom and there are many opportunities for A4e to support these plans with our established programmes.

I am delighted that we have been able to identify partners with whom we will be proud to serve and leaders in public life who have a vision for how we can Improve Peoples Lives. As Mark said in his presentation last week at One Vision when faced with the enormity of issues a township community has to start somewhere but where should we start? Is it housing, skills, community capacity building, trade union engagement, religious leadership, entrepreneurship, business start up, social enterprise well the simple answer is – yes.

We have been able to earn a chance to play our part in South Africa. It is a chance earned on the back of the work undertaken by our front line staff who serve communities around the world day in day out. Thank you for the commitment you make in your work everyday ensuring everything matters and we improve people’s lives. I look forward to working with each of you play our part in rebuilding South Africa.
