I had the chance to spend a chunk of time with members of our catholic community who are responsible for leading the education of children in their faith based schools. These professionals tackle their job of inspiring the young people in their care to learn and stretch their talents within the context of their faith.
Brother James Zullu is an international speaker who facilitated a conference for this group on the impact of change and how to lead and take people with you. James was brilliant; he spoke to a room of 300 people but managed to speak to each person as an individual.
There was lots of good stuff but something I will take away with me was the issue around burnout. We are all vulnerable to burn out. Burnout = the point at which our ability to care and absorb the troubles and issues of others ceases and we feel as though we are weary of the world.
The secret = solitude. We know about sharpening the saw but let’s ensure we are all able to protect a little piece of time each day for us to sit quietly and reflect on where we are, where we are going and prioritising the way we spend our time. Solitude is not loneliness it is about choosing to spend a little part of each day alone.
I’m off then to seek out that moment of solitude for me.
